WHAT DID THEY WRITE ABOUT HIM?
Philippe Soupault (1897-1990)
"Nâzım Hikmet was a human being, a great poet. I always ran into him by chance. Already the first time we met, I joyfully accepted the magnetism of his brightness. I was only acquainted with some periods of his life; I only knew some of the experiments he had undergone and overcome. He had become a legend. When one encountered his glance, one could not but realise the fact that Nâzım's fate was an exemplary one. He suffered direly for a long time but he was never defeated. [...] His poems, as is known, were admirable. None of those who read or listened to his poems, remained unchanged. [...]
"With him, the place of the poet in our century, was not only verified but also raised." (From the Introduction to the Anthology of Nâzım Hikmet's Poetry, 1964.)
