Peyami Safa (1899-1961)
"Peyami is an international type of person worthy of notice. Because one runs into many who resemble him not only in Turkey but also in many big cities of Europe. Peyami and those who resemble him are such examples as have become a trend mark of a kind of petit bourgeois intellectualism and who flutter ideologically in dead-end darkness.
"When we examine Peyami's intellectual life from the time he stepped into Babıâli Street to today, we see that he continuously acted undecisively between the left and the right. As long as he found a job and earned money he chose the right. Every time he was fired and became poor, he became a leftist. But the master provocateur against the left when he was on the right, was cunning enough to protect the right in his most leftist days."
