HIS EVALUATION OF OTHER ARTISTS

Vítìzslav Nezval (1900-1958)

"Nezval believed in the great justice, the great freedom, and the great happiness and that socialism will and should be realised, because of the fact that he loved life at full speed and without satisfaction. I do not think that one who does not feel ambition toward searching for and realising the labour, to think, to long for, to eat and drink, to dispute, the sea, the mountain, the stars, the experience of the tradition and the new, can be a socialist poet; like Nezval, as great and real as Nezval...
"I do not know Czech. But when I read Nezval's poems in translation in French and Russian, I admired the lust in him for colour, form and volume. I listened to his poems in Czech that were read by him many times. The Czech language is one of the beautiful languages. [...] In the harmony of Nezval's poetry, the folk songs of the Czech mountains and Smetana's compositions join each other."
