HIS EVALUATION OF OTHER ARTISTS

Charles Dickens (1812-1870)

"The English author Dickens is among those petit bourgeois authors who see life and reality thoroughly even up to the point where they have to start criticising it-albeit from their own point of view. They are great authors but they ultimately want to resist evil and disorder by abstract means of resistance, to straighten it up by means of unripe dreams and thus they have a softening, Christian side and that sort of thinking. However, this does not necessarily mean that we should throw Dickens into the wastepaper basket. We have a lot to learn from him, too."
