HIS EVALUATION OF OTHER ARTISTS
Abdülhak Hâmit Tarhan (1852-1937)
"Abdülhak Hâmit is not the genius-laureate. [...]
"If Hâmit had been able to define, on an international scale and in a fashion more effective than those up to that day, the characteristics of the social transition period peculiar to the east and to the Ottoman Empire, there would have been an Ottoman artist in the gallery of geniuses named as such. But he could not manage this. Many times, his contemporaries Namık Kemal and Ziya Paşa were more successful in doing so.
"Hâmit is a new poet for his age and a powerful Ottoman poet; that is all."
